In England

From 17 May, you can socialise indoors in a group of up to 6 people or 2 households, including for overnight stays. Up to 30 people can meet outside. Pubs, theatres and other venues can open indoors. Hotels, hostels and B&Bs can open for people on holiday. Read the guidance on what you can do.

Government recent and upcoming changes

As you plan for your post-lockdown outing, you may like to bear in mind that new rules came into place on May 17th. The following are not exhaustive but still apply at the time of writing:-

  • It will be table service only and you’ll only be able to sit with up to six people (including children) from multiple households, or more if from only two households.
  • Some pubs will require you to book. (I’ve included this info where I’ve found it).
  • Whilst our local hostelries are keen to welcome us back, some are anxious about how they’re going to operate efficiently with all the rules and regulations, so I suspect they’ll appreciate us being especially kind and patient while we wait for our drinks order!
  • Please drink responsibly. To clarify, this is just a Portishead pub round-up guide – not a to-do list!

PUBS NEAR PORTISHEAD

THE BLACK HORSE INN – CLAPTON IN GORDANO

The Black Horse, AKA The Kicker, reopened on Monday 12th April outdoors – now with extensive covered areas. Please park considerately!

We’re not operating a table booking service because we don’t believe it fits with the ethos of the Black Horse. We don’t think that people who visit us want to be limited to a time slot and so it would be near impossible to work.

While we really are very excited about welcoming people back again we’re also quite nervous because table service isn’t easy at a pub like ours and we hope that people will be patient with staff who will be working really hard to make sure people enjoy their first bit of freedom for a long time. We know that many pubs have decided not to open due to the limitations of the government regulations but we have decided to bite the bullet and go for it. We’ve been inundated with messages of support and encouragement from our loyal following since the roadmap out of lockdown was announce so we feel a duty to try our very hardest to do the best we can.

We will be serving a pared down lunch menu Monday to Saturday and our kitchen will be open 12 – 2:30 as usual. What everyone is really hoping for is kind weather! Outdoor service only will be reliant on it although we have organised some cover for some of our tables.

Thanks again, Jane.

PORTISHEAD PUB AND BAR UPDATES

Now I’ve rounded them all up together in this guide, I’m surprised to see how many pubs there are in Portishead. Did you count them? I feel I must reiterate the, “please drink responsibly” advice and also add a link to the Drink Aware website at this point!

The hospitality situation is constantly evolving, particularly at the moment, so please do check back here for further updates and pub and bar opening dates.

Please remember to share this article generously and let’s keep supporting our local businesses!

Although I’ve been to all of them, when we used to go out back in the olden days pre-Covid, we tended to gravitate towards one or two of these pubs. How about you? Do you share the love around or do you think of one of these pubs in particular as your local?
