I’m going to BritMums Live

and I don’t want to go.

Forget everything I have said in the past. I really do like being stuck in my comfort zone at home with my 3 year old and my 2 school-age boys. That’s why it’s called a ‘comfort zone’ isn’t it? My career background is in TV and video production. For many years I storyboarded, wrote, filmed, edited and voiced-over programmes on a broad range of subjects, but that was a long time ago. These days I’m not ready for dressing up smart, meeting and greeting or expectations that I’m anything more than someone’s Mum.

It’s not that I’m not prepared – I have my dress, well actually I’ve bought 4 dresses and am contemplating a 5th option. I even did my legs on time so I won’t looked like a plucked chicken on the big day and bought new underwear to go with whichever dress I wear. I bought my outgoing ticket and booked my hotel weeks ago.

It’s not that I’m not interested. I’m so interested in the schedule that I don’t know how to choose between photography and SEO tips. I want to go to everything.

I’m just a bit anxious for some reason. It doesn’t help that it’s billed as ‘the UK’s biggest parent blogging conference’. All those people who’ve been before, who have been blogging for years, who are experts in their field, who will all seem to know eachother already – and then there will be me.

Over the last few weeks since I’ve been running my site my husband has noticed a change in me. Last night he commented on how much happier I seem in my new quest, just before he went to bed and I promised I’d be up in a few minutes. I just had to do one more thing . . .

Because as much as I’m nervous and don’t want to go, I really DO want to go. I’m excited about travelling to London on the train in a smart outfit, which will only get dirty if I pour my own drink down it. I’m excited about putting names to faces and faces to blogs and forging new relationships. I’m excited about learning more about some of the topics I’ve struggled over for hours on my own. I may even be persuaded to partake in a glass of wine!

OK, the facts suggest that I am excited and I’m looking forward to everything and this is something I really have to do. Like going for a long run, I know once I’m at the end of the conference I’ll feel so pleased I did it. I am looking forward to meeting lots of you over the next couple of days,  particularly if you are new to all this and a bit anxious like me!

Must sign off now as I have an important decision about dresses to make! Maybe I’ll see you at Britmums Live!

I quite agree Melaina. I dressed up last year because it was such a novelty but each to her own!

    Well I’m nervous now!

    • Jane 21/05/2013, 22:18

I bet you’ll have a blast Coombemill. I suppose nerves are just a normal part of the process. Is this your first time?

And now you’re making me anxious – surely you’ve not already de-fuzzed your legs and chosen your outfits?! I’m so far off this stage, still trying to work out weather it’s a dress-down or dress-up occasion! On top of all that, how am I going to change between the afternoon and the evening with only 30 mins in between?! It’s going to be a blast!

    • Jane 16/05/2013, 10:32

      Hi Suzanne
OK, so I cheated! This was my post from last year when I’d never been to anything like this before and the nerves were setting in. Of course, I absolutely loved it and booked my super-mega-early-bird-ticket for this year as soon as they came out. I wore dresses so no need to change in-between but lots of people were casual, so a real mix.
Now I just need to book my hotel room, so if any of you lovely ladies is looking for a share, please email me. I know a few people are staying at the Travelodge but I’m reasonably clueless about London. Any other recommendations?

Have a good time, I understand there are ‘ loads ‘ of freebees there.

I have been advised to take an empty bag along! Also there was a mention of free wine – enough said!
