Sainsburys Opens in Portishead

New Store Opens – Sainsburys in Portishead

On Wednesday 29th October, Sainsburys opens their brand new store in Portishead.

Despite knowing for ages that this was on the cards, the opening seems to have sneaked up on me. A few days ago I spotted the petrol station signs so I drove round to investigate and was surprised to see the extent of the smart new development which seems to have sprung up with little sign of the major construction and disruption we’ve been looking out for whilst travelling along Wyndham Way.

But does Portishead really want another supermarket?

At a recent Chamber of Commerce meeting, Portishead branch manager, Paul Morrison explained a little about Sainsbury’s ethos. Right back in 1914 they had the courage to break with tradition and employ their first female colleague. Nowadays they say they’re keen to make a positive difference to the local community. In Portishead that means involvement in events like the raft race and carnival. They also plan to offer support to a carefully selected local charity partner.

Surely more local choice has to be better for us consumers and I hope that the addition of the new petrol station will lead to more competitive fuel prices, which might compare more favourably to those in Worle or Cribbs Causeway.

Personally I’ll be happy to have another supermarket on our doorstop but that’s just my opinion. What do you think? Are you looking forward to the new Sainsburys in Portishead?

It used to be the case that petrol was priced according to how far it had to travel from the place of import. (Well so I am told) So Portishead is closer to Avonmouth docks than Weston is so we should in theory have cheaper petrol. The Sainsbury’s explanation as to it being a volatile market blah blah does not answer the question in any way. Why are we paying more for fuel in Portishead? Why are we paying more for “everything” in Portishead?
I like Sainsbury’s and I am very happy they are here but for many years I have felt that we are paying a higher cost than other local areas. A proper explanation to the reason for this would be greatly appreciated. Sainsbury’s have indeed cut a penny off their fuel-so have the competition at Waitrose and Tesco! They are also guilty of making Portishead pay extra.

Competition is great but having waited so long for a second fuel station and having positively supported Sainsbury’s in the consultation, to find Portishead Sainsbury’s more expensive than Weston and Ashton is disappointing. FAIR FUEL PRICES FOR PORTISHEAD. Sainsbury’s is unnecessarily penny pinching here. No point the director Roger Burnley giving me the sales pitch that Sainsbury’s has cut the price at all its pumps by a penny when Sainsbury’s in Portisheas is still a penny dearer than outside the town. Mr Burnley refused to tell me his pricing strategy despite my polite request – shame on him. He is not influencing customers just shouting I am the boss at them!
